The Oar Fish. A sign of greater Peril?

The Oar fish (Enter some unintelligible word here meant to be the scientific name) is the stuff of legends. Many historians believe that this is where the idea of giant sea serpents come from. They are the world's boniest fish (A pain to eat) and can grow up to 50 feet long. They are known to stay at the deepest depths of the ocean and are very rarely seen, let alone studied.
So you can imagine everyone's surprise when people see an Oar fish carcass washed up on the beach. This 18 ft wonder can be left to circumstance. This occurance is very rare, but not entirely impossible, so no need to worry.
However, when a second one shows up within a week, this one 14 ft long, also dead, it leaves many people wondering.
What is going on down there?
One dead, fine. But TWO? This is too much. This is near impossible!
So that leaves us with the question, what is going on, and obviously, how do we prevent the death countless of priceless species?
Many people have different theories. Some say it is a sign of a major earthquake to hit various parts of the earth, a few say it's the end of the world with the 3rd coming of Jesus, and for those of us a bit more rational, the nuclear power leak from Japan finally reaching us is a definite possibility. This is very unfortunate, because we can not think of a way to prevent harm caused from this.
Sea world, the Scripps research institute and NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) are working together to solve this "murder mystery."
Issue is, experts weren't expecting for the Nuclear material to reach the US West Coast this soon. So, if the case may be that it isn't all the Japanese's fault, what is down there and how is it affecting these majestic creatures?
